About AP (Advance Placement)

Advanced Placement is a program run by the College Board (the makers of the SAT) that allows you to take special high school courses that can earn you college credit and/or qualify you for more advanced classes when you begin college. Indian students thinking of heading to the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Singapore or other countries for undergraduate studies can benefit immensely from taking AP courses and exams.

Why Should I Take AP Exams

The Advanced PlacementĀ® (APĀ®) Program helps students to take university-level courses while still in secondary school, to earn college credit, placement in advanced courses, etc. With benefits such as the opportunity to skip introductory-level courses in college and save on tuition fees. Most universities in the U.S. and Canada and 700 institutions outside the U.S., give credit for AP scores of 3 or higher. AP allows students to transfer their passion and interests to college programs by giving them a chance to take diverse courses. By earning credit and placement, students can save money and time in college. With its sterling academic reputation and focus on conceptual understanding, AP offers students an opportunity to stand out when applying to universities.

Major Benefits

  • Earn College Credits
  • Earn Advance Placement
  • Save Money and Time
  • Stand out in college admission
  • Merit based scholarships

Taking AP Exams In India

The AP Exams will be administered in AP authorized schools and test centres as paper-and-pencil exams over two weeks in May. Early testing or testing at times other than those published by Advanced Placement (AP) is not permitted under any circumstances. Late testing dates are available and offered by some test centres if students cannot test during the first two weeks of May. Note that schools and test centres select which exams from the full exam schedule they are able to offer. Registration for AP Exams at authorized test centers in India opens in September every year. Each test center has its own registration and payment instructions. Be sure to check with your preferred test center so you do not miss their deadlines. Students must complete registration and payment directly with their selected test center between September and mid-November, in order to reserve an exam seat at a test center. Some test centers may offer a second registration window but with additional fees.

Credit system for AP exams

  1. Your total score is calculated from your section scores. For most AP Exams, your score is a weighted combination of your scores on the 2 sections, multiple-choice and free-response.
  2. AP Exams are scored on a 5-point scale. Each college makes its own decisions about what scores it will grant credit or placement for.
  3. AP score setting is based on research. The AP Program conducts studies in all AP subjects to correlate the performance of AP students with that of college students in comparable college courses.

How do I select AP Subjects from STEM based subject pool

AP subject Selection for Engineering and STEM Based under graduation course abroad

AP Biology: For prospective science majors, this course provides a solid foundation for higher-level science courses and degree programs (i.e. pre-med, nursing, bio-engineering, pre-vet, research, microbiology, etc.).

AP Credits Equivalent: Two-semester college introductory biology course for biology majors

Recommended for:

Agricultural Engineering, Animal Sciences, Bio-Chemistry, Bio-Technology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Biology Majors, Environmental Sciences, Food Science, Forensics, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering , Genetic science etc.

Course recommended along with AP Biology: AP Chemistry

AP chemistry: Many engineering programs require all engineering students to complete at least one introductory chemistry course. The course includes Learning about the fundamental concepts of chemistry including structure and states of matter, intermolecular forces, and reactions.

AP credit Equivalent: Equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year

Recommended for:

Agricultural Engineering, Animal Sciences, Bio-Chemistry, Bio-Technology, Chemical Engineering, chemical and electrical engineering, Mechanical, industrial engineering.

Course recommended along with AP Chemistry: AP Physics and Calculus

AP calculus AB and BC

Calculus AB and Calculus BC are both designed to be college-level calculus courses. When it comes to the AP Calculus classes, you have three options: you can take AB and BC Calculus as a sequence, take AB Calculus only, or skip AB Calculus and go straight to BC Calculus. AP Calculus BC courses often cover everything in Calculus AB in the first semester, while AB stretches that material out over a full year.

Equivalent to

Course Equivalent to coverage Credits
AP Calculus AB AP Calculus AB is designed to be Equivalent of a first semester collage calculus course devoted to topics in differential and integeral calculus. 8 topics covered less than BC
AP Calculus BC AP Calculus BC is designed to be Equivalent to both first and second semester collage calculus courses 2 extra topics covered More than AB

Note: In most cases, we don't recommend taking both AB and BC Calculus. AB Calculus and BC Calculus are similar enough that taking them one after the other will be a lot like taking the same class twice, and it'll probably be pretty boring for students.

Recommended for: Push for BC Calculus if you're fairly certain you want to pursue engineering, natural sciences, or pre-medicine studies in college. BC Calculus will allow you to challenge yourself with a fast-moving, college-level math course, which will give you the skills you will need for engineering and science classes.

Course Recommended with AP Chemistry: AP physics, AP biology

AP Physics: There are four AP courses offered under this:

  • AP Physics 1 - AP Physics 1 was designed to be a first-year physics course which you can take without prior physics experience.
  • AP Physics 2 - AP Physics 2 was designed to be a second-year physics course. This means it should come after AP Physics 1 or any first-year physics course.

Both AP Physics C courses are calculus-based, meaning you should have already taken calculus or concurrently be taking calculus while you take either AP Physics C course. This is the main factor that makes Physics C more challenging than Physics 1 and Physics 2

Note: AP Physics C requires that students are enrolled or have already taken calculus

  • AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
  • AP Physics C: Mechanics

Each topic is supposed to be equivalent to one semester of college calculus-based physics. Because of this, AP Physics C is highly recommended to be at least a second-year physics course. So while you don't have to take Physics 1 or Physics 2 before you take Physics C, taking one (or both!) introductory physics courses is recommended.

Recommendation: AP recommends Physics C (along with AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC) for students aiming for engineering or physical science majors in college.
